Gabbidon, Delomar, Pata Skeng collab on ‘5th Gear’
Delomar has teamed up with dancer and creator Gabbidon and Pata Skeng for the track 5th Gear.
Built on the critically acclaimed 'WYFL' rhythm, the track is creating a buzz in dance spaces, driven by a fresh dance move created by Gabbidon, the same creative force behind the global Drift phenomenon.
"Gabbidon approached me with the idea and the dance move, and I wanted to do it instantly," Delomar said. "The dance was simple and bad but, more than that, the name 5th Gear connected with where I am mentally and in my career."
Gabbidon, who has been relatively quiet on the dance scene since the success of Drift and Dip, said the new move marks a deliberate return with an even bigger vision.
"I had the name 5th Gear and decided to turn it into everything, a riddim, a dance and a movement," he explained. "We done up on the highway already with Drift, so now we shifting into 'fifth gear'."
He recalled that Drift went global, with major international artistes and platforms embracing the movement.
"Seeing people like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Chris Brown doing the dance, it was shocking," Gabbidon recalled. "It carried me all over the world. That moment showed me how far dancehall can really go."
With 5th Gear, both Delomar and Gabbidon are aiming to tap back into that global dancehall energy, but with a modern twist. Delomar emphasised that the track stands out on the WYFL rhythm as the only dance-focused song.
"This riddim brings back that hard-hitting dancehall energy," he said. "When the beat drops, dancers go crazy instantly. That's the kind of feeling we wanted to capture."
The upcoming video for 5th Gear is expected to play a major role in pushing the movement, with Delomar noting the importance of visuals in today's music landscape.
"People need to see the moves, understand the dance, and connect with the energy," he said. "Visuals and music go hand-in-hand now, especially for dancing songs." And while the golden era of dancehall dances may be hard to replicate, Delomar, Pata Skeng, and Gabbidon believe 5th Gear could spark a new wave.
"It's not just about a dance, it's about a movement," Delomar added. "Every time the song plays, it pulls up multiple times because of the energy."
Gabbidon opined that 5th Gear can be even bigger than Drift.
"It's simple, catchy, and everybody can do it. With the right push, this can be one of the next big things out of Jamaica."
