Man charged after being shot by cop for allegedly breaking into his car
A man who was shot by a policeman has been charged on Tuesday after he was caught allegedly breaking into the cop's car along Barnett Street in Montego Bay, St James.
Maurse Beldavis, 43, is facing charges of malicious injury to property and simple larceny.
Reports from the Montego Bay police are that about 10:48 p.m. on Monday, the policeman saw Beldavis allegedly breaking the glass of his motor car and removing a bag from his vehicle.
The lawman reportedly called out to thief who ran. He was chased by the policeman.
During the chase, Beldavis was reportedly seen attempting to remove an item from his waistband.
The police say, the cop, in fear of his life, drew his firearm and opened fire, hitting Beldavis who fell to the ground.
A police team was alerted, which assisted Beldavis to hospital where he was treated.
Beldavis was placed in custody and subsequently charged.
His court date is being finalised.
