St Catherine residents chop alleged rapist to death

Tension erupted in the Bermaddy community of St Catherine after a man accused of attempting to rape a woman was fatally attacked by residents on Saturday.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

Police report that about 8 p.m. on Friday, the man allegedly assaulted a woman in the community and attempted to rape her. The woman reportedly managed to break free and ran into the community shouting "Rape," triggering an alarm among residents.

The suspect fled the area before police arrived.

Lawmen visited the community following the report but were unable to locate him at that time.

However, about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the man was reportedly spotted back in the area. Residents allegedly descended on him, attacking him with machetes and other objects.

He was later taken to the Linstead Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Linstead Criminal Investigation Branch has launched an investigation into the incident.
