Hobbled woman needs corrective surgery

Stacy-Ann Wright needs surgery to help her get back on her feet, literally and figuratively.

Just a few years ago, Stacy-Ann Wright lived an independent life and was able to provide for her family.

But life for the former Coronation Market vendor took a turn for the worst in 2023 when what she thought was a simple fall left her unable to walk and properly fend for herself. Unable to walk, the 48-year-old is in dire need of corrective surgery which comes at a steep cost of $7.8 million. She is reaching out to the public for assistance.

“I would like to get my life back on track. My babyfather used to help mi out but he died last October so now it’s really my sister who has been there to help mi out. My teenage daughter is there for me too, but I want to be back out there. Currently I don’t even have a walker so I can’t even go out and work like I used to,” she said.

Wright said she usually suffered from frequent muscle contracts but never made a fuss about it. But, in 2023, when she fell and was unable to move, she knew that something was seriously wrong.

“Mi normally have muscle contract in mi right foot and it would all wake mi up out mi sleep. Back in 2023, mi a walk normal and just drop. Mi couldn’t walk because mi foot get dislocated so dem carry mi to KPH (Kingston Public Hospital) and dem draw up back the foot. Mi end up go back a Public and mi admit fi about a month and mi start walk back pon di foot and a continue with mi life. The doctor dem did say mi fi do a surgery for $1.5 million, but dem say mi fi lose some weight. Mi do dat suh mi never have to do the surgery,” she said.

But in 2024, Wright said she had another misadventure when she slipped and fell after exiting the bathroom.

“Mi dislocate the same knee again and mi end up a KPH again and this time the doctor dem say it can’t fix the same way again. A doctor there said him could do a surgery, but after that him leave the hospital. Mi get a referral to University Hospital and dem say dem ago try and fix the foot so mi fi ask for help,” she said. Wright said that she wrote to the health ministry and money was earmarked for her to do the surgery.

“When mi go in for the date, the doctor who supposed to do the operation said because the foot can’t bend, she cannot do the surgery so that end up call off,” Wright said, explaining that the money was sent back to the ministry. Wright said that another doctor offered to help but her joy was short-lived.

“I was so happy only fi mi get a prescription, and when mi go find out the cost it was $7.8 million for it. Mi can’t find da money deh. Mi nah work and mi don’t have none at all. Mi don’t have any help and right now mi bredda dead and we can’t even bury him. So mi really a beg little help to get it done. Mi nuh used to myself like that at all. Mi contact Ministry of Health again but the persons say if mi fi get help mi nah go get so much money,” she added.
