Mount Pleasant advance despite second-leg defeat
Despite suffering their first defeat in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup, falling 1-0 to Defence Force in the second leg of the semi-finals last night, Mount Pleasant Football Academy advanced to the final with a 5-2 aggregate win.
Defence Force clipped Mount Pleasant at the National Stadium with Kevin Molino scoring the winning goal in the 12th minute of the contest.
Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore, head coach of Mount Pleasant, which had won their previous five matches, said while he was disappointed with the result, his team achieved their objective of advancing to the final.
"My disappointment was how we started the game. We didn't start the game right and we didn't start the game how we wanted," he said.
"After a 5-1 cushion in the first leg, it is kind of hard to motivate the players. Again, the preparation coming into this game was just a few days but as I've said before, we would have met our objective and I'm looking forward to the final."
Molino gave the visitors the lead after a strong start, arriving in the box to finish from close range.
Mount Pleasant responded and carved out a number of opportunities, but faulty shooting and a solid performance from goalkeeper Isaiah Williams kept the St Ann-based club at bay.
Raheem Edwards had an attempt at goal just before the half-time break, but his volley through a crowd of bodies in the box went straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.
The second-half went in the favour of Mount Pleasant, who continued to create opportunities but lacked a final touch.
Shaquille Bradford felt he had scored the equaliser in the 81st minute, but his goal was disallowed after VAR ruled him offside in the build-up.
Despite Mount Pleasant's pressure, Defence Force held on for the win as they now look towards the third-place playoffs for a shot at qualifying for the Concacaf Champions Cup.
Mount Pleasant, on the other hand, now await the victor of the second semi-final - to be played today between Cibao and O&M FC.
Mount Pleasant, by virtue of being in the final, have also booked their spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The final of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup will be played across two legs, on November 24 and December 1.
