Pelle Drive wins third staging of Flankers Night Out Netball Competition
The third staging of the Flankers Night Out Netball Competition culminated in a thrilling victory for Pelle Drive as the team emerged champions on Sunday (March 1) at the Flankers Netball Court in St James North Western.
In front of a vibrant and supportive crowd, Pelle Drive delivered a commanding performance throughout the knockout tournament to secure the championship title and the top prize of $45,000.
West Village claimed second place while Green Dot secured third place, each being awarded $25,000.00 and $15,000, respectively.
The annual competition, spearheaded by the Social Development Commission (SDC) in partnership with the St James North Western Constituency Office and key stakeholders, continues to serve as a powerful platform for community engagement and positive social interaction through sport.
A total of 11 teams participated in this year's staging, reflecting sustained community interest and involvement.
Team Captain and Wing Defence for Pelle Drive, Carla-Lee Tingling, described the victory as a proud moment for her community.
"This is my third-year competing, and each year feels more special. We came to represent Pelle Drive with pride, and we gave it everything to bring the trophy home. Winning the $45,000 is significant, but the real reward is seeing how this competition brings all our communities together. On the court we are rivals, but off the court we are neighbours and family," Tingling said.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the Social Development Commission, Omar Frith, commended the teams for their sportsmanship and consistency over the past three years, noting that the competition exemplifies the Commission's commitment to sustainable community development.
"When we see 11 teams coming together year after year in healthy rivalry, we know this initiative is achieving its purpose. Pelle Drive's victory is a testament to preparation, unity and community pride. Beyond the prizes, this competition continues to build social cohesion and strengthen relationships across Northwest St James," he informed.
Frith also announced that the SDC will be expanding its community sports initiatives in the new financial year, integrating sporting events with broader Government service delivery in areas such as health, education, social protection and citizen security.
The event was supported by the offices of the Minister of National Security and Peace and Member of Parliament for St James North Western, Dr Horace Chang, and Senator and Councillor for the Montego Bay North Eastern Division, Charles Sinclair, alongside corporate partners Sandals Resorts International and MBJ Airports Limited.
Coordination was led by the SDC's St James Office, with strong on-the-ground collaboration from the Flankers Community Development Committee (CDC).
Sports Coordinator for the Flankers CDC, Christopher Harris, highlighted the transformation the competition has brought to the area.
He said that "this has become one of the most anticipated events on our community calendar. Seeing Pelle Drive and the other teams compete with passion and respect shows how far we have come. The competition has helped to bridge gaps and build leadership among our young people".
As Pelle Drive lifted the championship trophy, the atmosphere at the Flankers Netball Court reflected more than a sporting triumph. The event once again reinforced the power of partnership, volunteerism and community pride in St James North Western
With three successful stagings completed, the Flankers Night Out Netball Competition is now firmly established as an annual highlight, with champions Pelle Drive already signalling their intent to defend their title next year.
