Update|teen who fatally hit student with metal chair charged with murder

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the brutal murder of the 16-year-old student who was struck in the head with a metal chair during a fight at a St Ann secondary school last week and later died.

Dead is Devonie Shearer of Tay Street in Ocho Rios, St Ann.

Reports from the St Ann's Bay Police are that about 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, an altercation developed between the two students at the school.

During the confrontation, the teen allegedly used a metal chair to hit Shearer in the head, causing a wound that left him unconscious.

The injured teen was rushed to hospital where he later died while undergoing treatment.

Investigators said the alleged attacker fled the campus after the incident but was later taken to the police by a parent the same day.

He was formally charged with murder on Thursday, March 5, in the presence of his parent after eyewitness statements implicated him.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Family Court on Wednesday, March 18.
